A genetic mutation causes the trunk of the tree to twist as it grows, resulting in an aberrant growth ring structure, leading to a wavy, irregular, curly, starlike, and lenslike grain appearance of the wood with a high shimmer. Valued for its beauty, Karelian Birch is a popular material for furniture building, knife handles, pen making, and other decorative applications.
